Design(s) used in this project are available here:
Piano Keyboard Embroidery Design

Materials:
  • Piano Keyboard Embroidery Design
  • One piece of applique fabric large enough to fit hoop
  • Tear-away backing
  • Black embroidery thread
  • Black bobbin thread
  • Embroidery machine
  • Scissors

Since I needed 10 napkin rings and was using them also as gifts, I edited the project by duplicating the design six times, as many as could fit in one large commercial hoop. I cut and pasted the outline and border of each napkin ring to run separately. This project can also be run singly, using a smaller hoop.

Step 1: Because applique fabric is heavy and backed with adhesive, backing during this step is not necessary. Hoop the applique fabric.

Step 2: Place embroidery hoop on machine and embroider design.

Step 3: When the embroidery is finished, remove the fabric from the hoop. Using the outline created by the design, cut out each of the pieces.

Step 4: Place the embroidered pieces on a protected surface, right sides down. Apply spray adhesive lightly to each.

Step 5: Hoop tear-away backing. Attach hoop to embroidery machine and embroider the outlines of the napkin rings.

Step 6: Place the embroidered and sprayed napkin rings in the hoop, one on each outline. Press into place so they saty positioned during the embroidery of the outline.

    Step 7: Embroider the borders.

Step 8: Remove the backing from the embroidery hoop. Carefully tear each napkin ring from the backing. Using an iron or a heat press, permanently adhere the backing to the napkin ring.

Finishing: I had originally planned to hand each stitch the two ends of the napkin rings together to form a circle. However, since I used them at a Festival of Tables luncheon, I decided to give them to my guests as a gift. I fastened the ends with an attractive pin. Then, when I presented them to my guests, I mentioned theat the momento would make a great bookmark. Needless to say, they were all pleasantly surprised. The finished project!
