While I often think it is cheating to work on a white background because it is hard to make a mistake, white is the perfect color for any season. It imparts a crisp and clean feeling in summer, recalls the snows of winter and serves to define the transitional aspects of spring and fall.

The style of the garment is integral to the embroidered design, as it dictates the overall shape. The garment I chose is a simple white blouse. I attacked this project in the very same manner I approach any and all embroidery design projects.

I started by deciding why I wanted to use embroidery. The answer to this was easy. It was actually twofold; I wanted to create a diagonal line on the blouse to offset the symmetrical lines of the garment and thereby creating a visual illusion of more height, and also to make a bold design statement on a veritable blank canvas.  While I could have gone with just about any color scheme, I decided since I wanted bold why not employ the colors to make it bold and to thereby also give a bright tropical feel.  Since the blouse has a deep but very narrow neckline, there is plenty of room to place the embroidery fairly high on the left front of the garment. By placing it very high we can take the most advantage of a diagonal overall design placement. The other consideration was the proportion. The design had to be large enough to make the statement I desired.

The first step was to choose a suitable pattern to layout the embroidery upon. I chose a simple shell pattern. Although the cut of this pattern is different in the neckline and armhole, I can adjust it to the specific garment when I hoop it.

Because the garment that I am embroidering upon buttons up the front I have to divide my design into two separate designs. My sewing field is large enough to accommodate to larger design on the left ( as you can see in illustration to the right). If yours is not, you would have to divide it up into probably 3 separate designs which would be hooped separately but abut each other.
