Use embroidery to enhance the coolest styles for the fall season.

What's new this fall - shape! Look for new silhouettes - the skinny jean, cigarette pants, black leggings, flat ballerina shoes, thigh-high boots, flamboyant sleeves and exaggerated collars.

What does all that mean for the embroiderer? The trend for embroidery is a flash from the past - the '50s. Florals dominate, but this season you'll find extra-long, satin stitches in wool and cotton threads. Beautiful for the runway, not so practical for everyday life. So skip the extra-long satin stitches and pull off the trend with the thread. To mimic the wool look, try YLI's Monet (25 colors available). Also check out Lana wool thread by Madeira. Don't miss Sulky's fabulous selection of cotton embroidery threads – Blendables in 42 shades of 12 wt. and 30 wt.!

Hot Fall Colors

  • Brown
  • Taupe
  • Moss green
  • Slate gray
  • Beige & winter white
  • Soft pinks and mauves

    Metallics

Gold is making a comeback. Gone are silver- trimmed handbags and belts, you'll see more gold than anything this fall. Keep that in mind when picking embroidery threads for fashion duds.

    Pants

Although the skinny jean is back, you'll find it only works on skinny, long-legged figures. So if you're not a size 0 - you can still pull off an updated look by narrowing your whole silhouette. Think straight leg jeans with a belted jacket or long tunic sweater. It looks fresh and new when compared to last year's wide bottom pants and cropped jackets.

  • Pocket Monograms

Pocket monograms are hot and the sky is the limit for the diversity of the lettering. Ornate, intricate designs paint a delicate touch while more robust designs make a statement.

    Skirts

Skirts are voluminous - great garb to hide figure flaws! And comfortable when paired with cozy leggings or tights. Think monochromatic to lengthen the vertical line. Big skirts tend to cut inches off average and short frames but solid, dark tights paired with the same color shoe can balance the look. Anchor the look with embroidered ballet shoes.

    Jackets

Jackets, usually nipped at the waist, look like works of art, as in sculpture. Peplums are in abundance and perfect for shaped-edge applique. Ultra-suede flowers and leaves wash well and withstand normal wear and tear. Layer the appliques for a full, lush look.
